DigitalSpy: Shontelle – Impossible (UK Review)Posted by Kedrew | Categories: Album News, Latest News, Reviews, United Kingdom
It’s not tricky to see why, with everyone involved in ‘Impossible’ delivering like they’ve got Sue Sylvester’s protein shake-scented breath warming their necks. Arnthor Birgisson’s Stargate-style production has a very appealingly restrained, Ina Wroldsen’s lyrics are blunt and utterly relatable, and Shontelle gives her strongest vocal performance yet without ever overdoing it. The result? A treat for everyone except the peeps at Greenpeace, who might not approve of a song that requires at least two Kleenex mansize every time you play it. Impossible is due to release on UK Amazon & iTunes, September 9th. (rated 5 stars)

DigitalSpy: Shontelle Interview (August 2010)Posted by Kedrew | Categories: Album News, Interviews, Latest News, United Kingdom
Shaking off the T-Shirt tag may be as much of a struggle for Shontelle as proving that she and countrywoman Rihanna are actually friends, but with the 24-year-old’s new single ‘Impossible’ a certified hit across the pond, we gave her a call to find out how she fancies her chances of repeating the feat over here. Congratulations on your success with ‘Impossible’ in the US. Did you know the song would be a hit when you first heard it? Have you heard rumours that it was turned down by both Leona and Rihanna’s teams? What’s the inspiration behind the song? Can you relate to it personally? And the video – it tells that story really well. Of course, Lady GaGa is a big fan of the mini-movie style videos you mention. Would you be keen to make your own nine-minute promo? |

Shontelle “Impossible” & “No Gravity” UK ReleasePosted by Kedrew | Categories: Album News, Latest News, United Kingdom
2009 saw the rise of one of the brightest sparks to emerge on the US urban music scene for a long while. Singer, songwriter, A-grade student, professional sportswoman, military officer, qualified lawyer and proven entrepreneur, there is far more than just one talented string to Shontelle’s metaphorical bow. From the moment Shontelle signed a record deal with SRC – The Island Def Jam imprint run by legendary music industry mogul Steve Rifkin (of Loud and Wu Tang fame) – things moved at a rapid pace for the 23-year-old Bajan singer-songwriter. Within months of inking her first record deal, Shontelle’s debut single ‘T Shirt’ emerged as one of 2009’s biggest global hits, remaining in the UK top 10 for over a month, garnering 10 million+ youtube views, and selling over 250,000 units in the UK alone. Shortly afterward Shontelle supported New Kids on the Block and Beyonce on the European legs of their tour, and had Akon step up to feature on her second single ‘Stuck With Each Other’ which was the title track for the box office smash ‘Confessions of A Shopaholic’. By the end of the year, even the president of the USA was a big fan of Shontelle – Barack Obama used her album track ‘Battle Cry’ on his Campaign Trail compilation album entitled ‘Yes We Can: Voice of a Grassroots’. Now, less than a year later, Shontelle is gearing up to release ‘Impossible’ the first single from her second album, ‘No Gravity’. Currently a big hit stateside (having sold 600,000+ units and garnering over 8.5 million views on Youtube/VEVO alone), the immediately infectious and supremely radio-friendly ‘Impossible’ is set to take the UK by storm this summer. Shontelle’s ‘Impossible’ will be released in the UK by SRC/Island Records on August 30th 2010. Her second album,‘No Gravity’, will be released in the UK by SRC/Island Records in November 2010. - Confirmed by Island Records & GalaxyFM (UK) – Thanks Mark! |

Neonlimelight interviews Shontelle (July 2010)Posted by Kedrew | Categories: Album News, Interviews, Latest News
But don’t go thinking Shontelle is a copy cat. Turns out, as we learned when we chatted with her last week, the cover was in the works long before Miley thought of it — and long before Shon even had a name for her album. With a title picked out and a chart-scorcher of a single in the form of the strikingly gorgeous pop ballad “Impossible,” Shontelle is ready to break free and show the world what she has to offer. See what Shon told Neon Limelight about shooting the album cover, not being afraid that her album comes out the same day as Katy Perry’s, and the “unbelievable” success of “Impossible” in their exclusive interview below. Neon Limelight: Tell me about this hot album cover! What was the concept? Shontelle: The concept is pretty interesting because when we were — I didn’t even have a name for my album yet when we did the photoshoot. NL: Oh wow. Shontelle: It was kind of like, [SRC Records head] Steve Rifkind and [Universal Motown's] Sylvia Rhone, they were like ‘you need to start shooting something now because we know when we want to get your album out, we gotta package it,’ blah blah blah and I’m like I don’t know what I’m doing! [laughs] And they’re like ‘just think of something!’ So I just thought about how I want to portray myself or what is it that I want people to see. I thought OK, it’s cool for people to just see me and see photos of me, but I sort of know that fans want a lot more than that. They want you to be creative for them, they want you to spark their imagination or something. They want you to provoke them in some way, you know. They want to feel something when they look at photos of you. So I thought, what do I want to feel like? Then I thought about the song I have, “Superwoman,” and said, you know what, let’s just do a photoshoot that makes me look like a superhero. I just thought, I don’t know how we’re going to do this, but don’t be cheesy and don’t make it obvious. Like, I don’t want to be in a cape or in spandex or anything. [laughs] But I was just like just make me look like I could be an action figure or something, so that was sort of what we were going for. We just did a photo shoot to portray me almost as if I was different types of action figures or like heros or characters or different sides of me. I chose the photo that’s on the cover because I just felt that…I know the label was pressuring me, they wanted me to have an image that had my face in it, and to me, that was just seemed like, even though it looked like I was in a cage, it almost looks like the cage is floating and there’s like no gravity. The look on my face and my body language is like ‘I’m still coming for you, world. Nothing’s gonna stop me. Not even these bars.’ That was just an amazing day. I was so excited. When I saw them bring out that cage I was like no way! This is so awesome! I was like no one’s done this, no one’s been in a cage…and along comes Miley [Cyrus]. [laughs] How dare you copy me, Miley! Oh well! It happens! NL: Cages are having the best year ever. Shontelle: Yeah! That’s what a lot of people have been saying. We realized cages have been kind of a thing. Maybe everyone is feeling trapped in some way and everyone’s just trying to break out. |

Aceshowbiz Interview: Shontelle Talks “No Gravity”Posted by Kedrew | Categories: Album News, Interviews, Latest News
Shontelle has been hard at work, finishing her second studio album “No Gravity”. In anticipation of the album which will be released later this year, she exclusively spilled the beans to AceShowbiz on what kind of sounds she is cooking up for the upcoming release. She also talked about a possible duet with David Archuleta. Additionally, she discussed two songs which she wrote for the sophomore set, saying that she co-penned one of them with Bruno Mars. As a promotional effort, she stated her camp are currently working on a tour. ASB: Your new record is going to hit the stores in days. How do you feel? Shontelle: I’m extremely nervous about the release of “No Gravity” because it’s very difficult climate we’re working in now. Album sales in general are down so I’m hoping to be one of the few to be the exception to the rule. I hope it’s much better received and appreciated than “Shontelligence”. ASB: What can you tell us about the difference between “No Gravity” and your debut album? Shontelle: “No Gravity” is a lot cleaner and more polished. We have bigger budgets this time. I got to work with a lot more established writers, producers and artists on this one. “Shontelligence” was more rootsy and gritty and introductory. We were able to pin point my biggest fan base. I made this album for them because they are the ones who supported my music the most. They made me. My biggest fans love pop, rock and dance music. But I also have a lot of R&B fans. So I tried to blend those styles in a fun way. ASB: So are you ready to divulge the “secret collaborators” that you keep all this long? Shontelle: I thought about it and to be honest, I know that’s what gets people all excited but I want people to be excited about me not who I’m working with. They are already established and although I’m grateful to have the opportunity to work with them and gain their respect, I’m an emerging artist and I don’t want to take away from my talent. I need it to really shine this time around so I’m not overlooked. I feel like that happened with my first project. So for now I’ll keep it a secret. ASB: Is it true that you have worked with David Archuleta for the album? Shontelle: LOL! Ya’ll are smarty-pants! David and I are good friends. We have alot of the same fans and they’ve been lobbying on Twitter for a SHONLETA duet as they call it. I guess everyone will have to wait and see. |

Shontelle recently told

Cages in album artwork are having the best year ever. Teen queen Miley Cyrus got trapped in one on the cover of her single, “Can’t Be Tamed,” and now pop star Shontelle is utilizing her own personal jail on the cover of her sophomore album, No Gravity, out August 24.
