AOL Blackvoices interviews Shontelle (January 2011)

    Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

shontelleAOL Blackvoices: It takes a lot more than just a great voice to survive in the music business nowadays, and singer Shontelle has nailed it. The R&B songstress, who frequently rocks her locks long and sleek, shared what she loves most about her hair. Her fave rave? It’s speed! “I love that It grows really fast so I don’t have to worry about cutting it or experimenting gone awry,” says Shontelle.

While many celebs travel with a glam squad to keep their hair tight, Shontelle keeps things low maintenance when on the road. “If it were up to me, I would probably always look like I just went surfing or swimming,” says the Bajan beauty, “but in front the camera and on stage, it has to be all pretty and sleek and well done, so it is a real challenge for me on the road. I rock ponytails, natural waves or bone-straight styles a lot for this reason.”

While many women tend to stick with one look that works best for them, Shontelle isn’t afraid of switching it up every once in a while. “My hair has been long, short, wavy, light brown, almost blond, jet black — you name it, I’ve probably tried it,” she say. “Braids, weaves, wigs of all kinds. Fringes, bangs, shags, layers, no layers. Highlights, lowlights, all kinds of colors.”

Even with a range of styles under her belt, her signature is a sleek pony. “A high ponytail makes me feel like I’m about to hit the catwalk or hop into a spandex suit and save a city!”

To get Shontelle’s style, try some of her go-to products like: Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Nourishing Sheen Spray ($4.79, Target Stores), Bed Head Styling Superficial Smoothing Liquid for Shiny and Silky Hair ($24.50, drugstore.com), or Bumble and Bumble Styling Creme ($24, bumbleandbumble.com).

    MTV Interview: Shontelle’s Style Confession

    Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

    shontelle

Shontelle’s video for her single ‘Perfect Nightmare’ just dropped last week, and in it, the 25-year-old singer shows off a number of looks, such as oversize shirts with no pants and high, high ponytails. But in real life, it’s a different story.

When Shontelle stopped by the MTV Style studios recently, she told them she tries to be “sensible” about fashion. “I don’t know if I would say I’m a diva about anything style related, but I just really love to be fab,” she says. “I love to feel really good about myself and confident, and fashion affects that a lot.”

As for heels: “I love to be fierce, but I also like to be comfortable. And heels really hurt,” she explains. But, as every lady knows, there are exceptions. And for Shontelle, that means squeezing into a pair of stilettos every so often. “I will, every once in a while, sacrifice my soul for the sake of fashion,” she says. “And I will be in immense, tremendous pain just for the sake of fabulosity.” Watch the video below:

FAB 5: Shontelle’s Style Endeavor (Singersroom)

    Thursday, September 30th, 2010

    shontelle

In a recent exclusive Singersroom interview, Shontelle sat down to share with everyone about her style evolution as an artist, love for sequin and Fashion Week favorites.

Surviving Fashion Week… “I am officially fashion weak with an ‘a.’ (laughs) I was literally in London doing promo, flew right back to New York, hopped right off the plane and walked right into Alexander Wang. It was really exciting because I got to be the guest of John Dempsey the president of MAC [Cosmetics]. That was so much fun! Some of my favorite shows were G Star, they were awesome! Alice + Olivia, Cynthia Steffe was really good too. So many shows, but I think Alexander Wang tops it for me. That collection is amazing.”

Favorite Arrives… “Fall is my favorite, favorite fashion season because you have so much more to work with. You know, because it’s not hot but it’s not cold yet. So you can layer and all the fun boots are starting to come out. So my favorite things for fall, right now is leggings. I’m a leggings girl. Leggings are back and they’re not going anywhere for a while. Leggings are a staple for me. I’m also noticing the peep toe wedges which I really love.

Of course, I already had to pick up a pair for myself. And then the thigh high boots always make a comeback in the fall so I got those Chanel [boots]. They’re so ridiculous! They literally go right under my butt cheek. So those are some of my favorite trends right now. Leather and sequins are really big for fall. Like leggings are really in and they’re using the lighter side of leather like tans, camels and lighter browns.”

PaperMagazine: NY Fashion Week Recap Blog

    Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

    shontelle

Paper Magazine: Up-and-coming R&B songstress Shontelle Layne’s much-buzzed-about album No Gravity just dropped yesterday, but somehow Layne has kindly found the time to whip up this recap of all of her fun at New York Fashion Week last week. Here, she recounts five days taking in shows with her label mate and pal Kelly Rowland and narrowly avoiding a serious outfit mishap.

    Day 1!

I’m 5’10 so I have never slept well on planes, no matter how luxurious the cabin may be or how many eyeshades I have on. This time, I have a good reason not to sleep – I’m on way to the Alexander Wang show in t-minus five hours!

My single, Impossible, just went Platinum and I’ve spent the past week in London prepping for the release of my album. Originally, I was scheduled to arrive back in New York City on the evening of the 11th with my first show starting the next day. I’m a lucky girl though because my friend, MAC Cosmetics president, John Demsey, has invited me to attend the Alexander Wang show as his guest.

My flight touches down at JFK at 11:00 am and only one thought is in my head: DO NOT MISS ALEXANDER WANG. I hustle through customs and head to PR firm’s offices where my clothing and makeup team are waiting – but not without making a quick emergency shoe pit stop at Christian Louboutin for a pair of heels.

My trunk of clothing and stage costumes – which conveniently had all of my heels and boots – was shipped back to the US before I received my invitation to the show and in my carry-on I only have flats and a pair of slippers which are cute for day but not for fashion shows. The sales girl looks at me like I am nuts as I zip into the store, select a gorgeous pair of sky high pumps with black zipper details on the heel and head to the counter with my credit card in under five minutes. I don’t care though because I have a passion for fashion and I’m going Alexander Wang! (con’t…)
